CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS AND REGISTERED AUDITORS
Kinnair and Company have been in business for over 50 years and are situated in Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The partners, Mai Mak and Graham Murray, of Kinnair and Company decided to incorporate their business into Kinnair and Company Limited and subsequently split out their charity and audit clients into Kinnair Associates Limited. Both limited companies are registered as Chartered Accountants with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
Detlev Anderson and his team joined Kinnair Associates Limited in April 2022.
Kinnair Associates Limited is also registered with the ICAEW as an audit firm.
Whilst the two sides of the new firm bring different experiences, we share similar values.

Our Directors
Mai Mak BSc Hons FCA
Managing Director
I am the Managing Director of Kinnair & Company Limited and of Kinnair Associates Limited, our auditing arm. I was born in Hong Kong and come from an entrepreneurial background. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, I joined one of the Big 4 Accounting Firms specialising in auditing and forensic accounting. I then joined Kinnair & Company specialising in auditing commercial companies, charities and not for profit organisations, and business consultancy. In 1997, I became the Managing Partner of Kinnair & Company and, since its incorporation in 2021, I am now the Managing Director. I am also a Responsible Individual for audits which qualifies me to review and sign off UK audits.
I have served as a director of Age Concern North Tyneside and as a trustee of Museums Northumberland. I have also volunteered for a charity, Safe Families for Children, for several years and I currently act for several Christian-based charities.
I enjoy fell walking and I’m working my way through the Wainwrights.
Detlev Anderson BSc Hons FCA DChA
Audit and Accounts Director
I graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Chemistry before qualifying with first time passes becoming a qualified Chartered Accountant in 1987. I was one of the first UK individuals to obtain a ICAEW Charities Diploma (DChA). However, my knowledge covers most areas of business advice and accountancy, so I am able to provide advice to a wide range of businesses and individuals. I moved to Kinnair with most of my clients and team in April 2022.
I enjoy hill walking from Munros to the Town Moor, armchair astronomy, and hunting for second hand Scandi crime books. I also act as a servant to a demanding cat.
Graham Murray FCA TEP
Tax Director
I am a Chartered Accountant and member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and have specialised in the personal, corporate, trust and charity taxation of the Firm’s clients for over 35 years whilst remaining active in accountancy and audit practice throughout that time.
I enjoy reading and countryside walking, especially in Scotland, and have maintained a lifetime interest in British birdlife. My favoured travel is to Kenya and Tanzania to spend time with my grandchildren.
Our Senior Staff
Chris Black Bsc Hons FCA DChA
Audit and Assurance Senior Manager
I have worked as an accountant in Practice in the North East for over 30 years in auditing, accounting, and corporate recovery roles. I joined Kinnair in April 2022 and I am a Senior Manager in our auditing and business assurance sector where I work within our commercial, charity, Academy, and pension sectors. Having once been described as an “expert” in charities 25 years ago, I feel I am now almost able to deserve that label and my portfolio of charities with whom I have worked includes several well-known North East charities. I also prepare forecasts and models for commercial clients particularly around loan generation and business sale events.
Outside of work, I can sometimes be found making heavy weather of a hill-walk. I also play the piano, badly, but with great enthusiasm.
Gillian Smith ACA
Audit and Accounts Manager
I am a Chartered Accountant, passing all my ICAEW exams first time. I provide accounting, auditing, and taxation services to a variety of organisations from commercial companies to academies and charities.
I specialise in the not-for-profit sector with a portfolio that includes all sizes and types of charities, schools, and academies.
My interests include music, spending time with family, walks with Ozzie the Labrador and travel, particularly to the USA where I aim to visit each state at least once.
Caron Smeaton
Tax Manager
My role is Head of Tax and I joined Kinnair in September 2020. I deal with the more complex tax matters and high net worth clients. I pride myself on customer satisfaction and ensure that the best tax advice is given irrespective of the client background or budget.
My career began way back in the early 1980’s when I got a job as a Clerical Assistant at HMRC (or HMIT as it was back then), gaining extensive knowledge and working with some highly knowledgeable colleagues. When Self-Assessments started, I took the plunge to take up a Tax job within Accountancy which was the turning point of my career. Over the years, I have learned to deal with Business/Corporation Tax and Accounts and Payroll. In a previous role, I also oversaw an Accountancy practice alongside two Partners for many years and dealt with the staff personnel and development.
Outside of work, I love nothing better than a stroll with my dogs. I started with having well behaved Rottweilers, and more recently I have two very demanding and spoilt Shih Tzus, Rocco & Roxy.
Ian Wanless
